Hi, I’m hoping for an opinion about a compressor. I think I’m going to buy a used one of these locally unless someone is familiar with this type of compressor and doesn’t recommend it for airbrushing.

It is a Jun-air brand, but instead of a refrigerator style compressor motor it has an oilless Gast compressor (rocking piston). It has a 1 gallon tank. These cost over $4,000 new. I have a chance to buy one with 800 hours of use for $125. They are rated for 8,000 hours or more (15,000 piston seal). This sounds good to me but I am not familiar with this type of compressor. I’m interested because it’s a good brand and is only 46 decibels. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks

IDK but I'd jump on it. Gast systems are nice

Junair is a good brand and for 125 I would go for it I know I would if I needed a good compressor

2.5 cfm at what pressure I wonder.
If it's at 40psi you could probably marginally power that lph-80 at the 25 or so you usually end up running. Idk how much you need something quiet when youre running a mini gun but....
IDK If I didnt really need it, knowing I could pick up a california air at any given time for the same price I see why your on the fence, It looks so classy though. Hmmm

From everything that I can find on them there a great compressor, being that's made for medical use also it should run some good clean air too

That’s EXACTLY why I’m on the fence. A “new” California Air vs used.

I have a California Air 4.6 gallon that I use for lph80. Its not super loud (68 decibels?). This Jun-Air is 20 decibels less. I would use it as an indoor compressor.

I did some reading about it too. The clean air sounds nice. My current silent compressor (refrigerator style) I’ve noticed small amounts of oil in my first water trap

LOL yeah, good luck deciding man haha. I'm just throwing stuff out there.
The only real advantages I can think of are
1 Gast pumps dont give much pulsation when they run. 2 It looks really cool.
It's clean too like BP was saying but I honestly have no idea how much thats a factor w waterbase paint, maybe a lot, maybe a little IDK, never airbrushed with medical pump.

On the other hand from what little experience I have with gast pumps, when they go they just go, they dont fade out like reciprocating pumps. A lot of recips get used Like 5 times over their service limit because of that.

If you can test if before use.. test it. Buy it if it looks good and then contemplate selling it on Ebay or something. You could buy a couple microns with the profit. Don't let the opportunity pass you up just because you have it in your head that it would just be an "extra". Extra money in your pocket is more like it with a little effort.

Well, I couldn’t pass up an opportunity. I went to look at it and it ran fine. So I bought it. I was surprised that it was as quiet as my silent compressor. Even quieter, because the cutoff “hiss” is not as loud.

Here it is next to my silent compressor for comparison:

I’m happy about it. It was a lucky find.
