Agreed, there's something about a cat that makes them different. You don't have control over them like you do a dog which makes owning one "interesting" lol

I still really miss my old cat even though he's been gone almost 8 years.

we named our little kitten Odin and he is already used to living with 2 dogs and 2 other cats and he really doesnt care if he is playing with the cats or with the dogs as long as he can play and run/climb to safety high up in a scratch pole when things get rough

What a happy household. I love it when dogs and cats live happy together.
I am getting a new dog member to our family. The biggest condition was that she likes cats. They met a couple days ago and Stewie is still wondering where the new dog went. I get her on Sunday...It is so exciting....

I find it easier to train a dog to get along with cats than to get a cat used to living with a dog :)

thanks :) and @LadyCharlie we tried to downsize and stick to 2 dogs and 2 cats but we failed :D we used to have "zoo" with over 6 cats and 3 dogs but after my wife had a stroke we had to make a choice : let things get out of hand or gain control back and it was not a easy choice to make but I re-homed 2 dogs and after I had my stroke my wife re-homed 4 cats
that was 7 years ago and like my wife I did almost fully recover from my stroke and I am able to control our 16 month old American bulldog / Doggo Argentino mix around the now 9 weeks old kitten

Good for you! Glad you are both well recovered and enjoying the daily challenge of critter family members. It's definitely never dull.

you are so right there and there are moment when I could do with a dull moment LOL but yes I totally enjoy the daily challenge and I love seeing how my young dog does his best to play nice with the kitten but at times totally fails when he puts his big head on the kitten to hold it down for a doggy style cuddle and the kitten manages to slip away and runs for cover high up the scratch pole and giving him the finger kitty style :D
If it wasnt for my wife who worries about the kitten I would let him find out how sharp the kittens claws and teeth really are but my wife fears he would "hit" back with his paws so I call him off before the kitten gets to the point it feels the need to claw him

Our kitten, rightly named Bug, is fearless! She terrorizes the dogs and our other cat. When she pushes her luck in an attempt to terrorize my Macaws they scream "no Bug! get down!" Lol. Did I mention it's a zoo?!!

hahaha Charlie I can see it before my eyes , back in the days we had Turkish angora's : a cat breed that is more dog than cat and fear nothing I have seen 10 week old kittens enter a new house and taking it over from the dogs and other cats in a minute flat I do miss that breed but they are more or less still feral cats ( the good ones that is ) and they need a lot of training/ attention to become sweet house cats so we know we cant take in a a kitten like that but a Norwegian forest cat is the next best breed if you can pick one that is as they say "in your face" and wont back down from your hands when the first meet you and Odin was the only kitten that didnt back down from my hands and was all over my fingers so I knew he would stand his ground in our house :)

I was wondering about that when you posted this thread. How did you know dogs will get a long with new cat? Are dogs used to cats?

the dogs are not used to cats when I get them but when I go look for a dog I let a dog pick me as his leader , that way I know he or she will fit in our mixed pack and accept any new addition to the pack.
I know this sounds easy and to me it is easy but I also understand it is not that easy if you dont know how to see if a dog accepts you as a leader
When I went to see the big mix Jake he was already 5 moths old and not used to strange people , it took him nearly 15 minutes to gain enough trust in me to check me out but when he finally did he was challenging me to play with him and that was the moment I knew he was the dog for me
