I have posted in the introduction. I am interested in painting wood, Baltic birch plywood to start. The paint will be golden hi flo but being water based I would like to avoid raising the grain so I am wondering if anyone paints wood and if they use a sealer such as shellac or lacquer. If you do does it effect the adhesion or the drying time?

I’m sure there are a few members who have painted bare wood. I can check with a friend later tomorrow if nobody chimes in before hand.

I can't speak to the specific woods but a good sanding dealer coat (or 3...) will be the trick I suspect.

I have painted on wood and you need a good sealer on it , depending on what you want to paint or if you want the wood grain to show there are a few options : you can use varnish if you want the wood to show or gesso if you want a nice white background to paint on

Createx has a clear sealer. product #6000 that can be applied directly on wood. If you need a colored base, they have a full line of colors and they can also be tinted to any color.

Thank you for the replies. Ronald art I will pop out to Michaels today and pick up some varnish to try. The project I want to try is to paint some feathers that I use with my dream catchers. I currently have dewaxed shellac and nitro lacquer but do not know how the water based paint will react with them.
