I was wondering and haven't tried it but has anyone that has side feed brushes plugged 2 cups into the brush at the same time with 2 different colors ????

I used to have a Iwata that this could happen and now I just got in a new Badger side feed that has the holes on both sides for the cup. I know the older Badger 100 had either right or left setups.

    Just curious .

Might give this a try and actually see what would happen. LOL

I have a couple of side feeds but it never crossed my mind about plugging 2 cups in. Don't forget to share your results :)

I've always thought " what if " if I could do something this way or that way. Sometimes things work out and some times they don't. But most times, it doesn't work out like I thought it would.

Curiosity is my thing most times. It does keep my mind busy. LOL

Well my curiosity got the best of me. I put some CI white in one cup and black in the other. It tried to mix both in the brush until one side ran out and it was a toss up of spraying anything. If both cups had paint, it was interesting how much it mixed them together. It came out a lighter black than just all black. I might try different colors next and see what happens. I just have to be sure both have paint in them.

Very interesting that I couldn't control how much each cup used though to maybe get a color other than just equal amounts of each for a color match of a reference.

On for the next " what if " project. LOL

You would probably be better off using blue and red, White only needs a drop of black to change its colour as would yellow with red for example.

Sorry Jackie, just couldn't help it. Might have started a whole new airbrush setup. LOL LOL Dave might step in and come up with a way to control how much it will mix with each other.

    Interesting thread.

It has me wondering all sorts of things about the physics involved. For example, assuming an airbrush is designed to accept paint through one cup port and you add a second, are you changing the rate at which the paint is atomized, or is the point of entry such that it just seems like more paint in one cup? Also, if you are using two colors with different pigment loads, are they still drawn in at the same rate?

This is pretty cool. My analytical geek brain is looking forward to the results! :)

It's way above my brain cell. I played with a little more but it does work. If there was a way to control how much of the paint is used from each cup would be great but just from what I tested, it came out equal amounts until one cup ran out. I didn't measure what I put in each cup so what little I tested, it worked just fine. It was a little weird looking at 2 cups on the brush.

If you have the brush and cups, give a go.

I don't have any side feeders (yet), so I'm living vicariously through you, Sir!

Come to the dark side, you won’t regret it! I fought against it for years, once I got one it’s now the brush I reach for when doing detail, I don’t have a general purpose side feed .... yet!
If all my brushes got stolen I’d buy side feeds first :)

This could be a really interesting way to mix colors. Seeing as there is no control of the amount of paint being mixed, you could produce one-of-a-kind colors. Of course, you could also end up with mud. :D I'm game to give it a try.

The only way that design work is if the one side is blocked. As soon as there there is a leak in the vacuum, it will not suck paint. So if one cup runs out before the other, it will stop working.

I found that out real quick Andre. Just a thought I had trying the idea. Might work ok if needed but I don't think I'll use the idea much if any.
    Thanks
