I though it was about time I created a log.
Custom Painted cars and bikes is what first drew me into wanting to learn. As I had absolutely zero experience in art of any kind, my goal was to learn how to use multi layer stencils and achieve race car graphics.
The folks on this forum pulled me into wanting to try actual pictures, which was never my intention lol. But the work I saw here genuinely inspired me and the support made it seem possible. So I can honestly say this place has made me 100x better than I ever thought possible. I’m not done learning by a long shot! But I’m amazed where I’ve gotten to.
My biggest hope for this thread is that somebody starting from a similar position sees what being a member here can do for you.
That’s not to say my work it’s self is magnificent lol. I’m totally talking about the amount of progress.
Thanks for looking.
As always questions are encouraged.

First skull I ever tried after some time learning dots and lines.
I can still remember being pleased you could at least tell what it was supposed to be.

Second go at the same image after trying to use the advice given to me after posting the first one.
The only thing I remember about this one was that I enjoyed doing it, and after posting the thread Jackie said “nice job, but don’t outline the image as it makes it look like a cartoon”. I remember thinking “holy crap… she’s right” lol.

Tried another image.
A classic example of going too dark, too soon and spending the rest of the time going darker and darker to try and balance it out.
It’s unlikely to happen! Always remember it is much easier to add more paint than to take it away. Slowly build up colour.

Now this one was the first piece I turned out that I was kinda proud of.
Mr.Micron was receiving messages probably every 90 seconds while I worked on this LOL. He walked me through pretty much every step.
I remember the background was black, so I flooded the negative of a papercut stencil white and worked with black to shape the image. Not the approach I would take now, but it can work.

I felt a small build in confidence after the last skull. So thought I could take a crack at a different image. Being a huge movie nerd I’m always drawn to my favourite movie characters and images, so I wanted to give Michael Myers a whirl.
Still using simple papercut stencils and trying to take in all the advice.
Add trans base to black to allow for a slower build.
Don’t got too dark too fast.
Paint what shapes are ACTUALLY there, not what you THINK is there.
This is also when I found out that painting ears can be tough LOL.

This was a fairly quick, fun piece painted on an old oil can. It followed a tutorial from a British artist called Mick Neil. It’s still up on his YouTube channel and still a good learning piece to try.

Another pop culture character. This was from a reference by comic book artist Alex Ross. I learned that I needed more detail in my reference. The reference is great, but had so much shadow that I found it hard to tell where some of the shapes started. It was also very early in playing with colour. I didn’t have a green paint at the time, so was pretty happy to mix something close to what I wanted.
I used a light box to transfer the image and more detail was lost. I think this was the first piece not using a papercut stencil.

This was my first foray into Candy paint. I used a metallic silver for the base and green Candy2o over top. It was painted on paper and my noobiness meant I didn’t realise that Candy colours need a gloss topcoat to show their best lol. Hey ho, I know that now at least.
Also I used black for the shading (face palm). Nowadays I would either use the same Candy colour to darken the image or a blue and green Candy over top. The blue won’t kill the image in the same way that using black did.

This one’s simple. Monochrome eye from Mitch’s channel. I was really happy with this at the time. Sure I can look back now and see the glaring problems. But I love it because I remember how it made me feel at the time.

This one was a seasonal piece that came together pretty quickly for me. Again, I see the black in the red of the hat and wonder what the hell I was thinking lol. But that’s the way learning goes.
This piece won the Airsick Stencil challenge that week. I was so amazed! It definitely was not the “best” piece submitted lol. But maybe they liked the fact that it was the week of Christmas and I did this. Who knows, but I use those stencils to this day so that’s pretty cool.

Y’all know that feeling of “I’m going to leave it here before I screw this up”?
That is what this piece says to me lol. It doesn’t look finished but i stopped because I didn’t really know what else to do too it. It maybe worth a revisit someday.

This was the first piece that I painted with my Micron. My girlfriend Amanda was well aware of how much I loved painting and could see what a benefit it was to my mental health, so she bought me a CM-C+. I was literally speechless and am so great full to this day.

This one was for the afore mentioned Amanda.
It took me so long that I did miss the planned finish time of Valentine’s Day, but she was stoked all the same. It’s currently in a frame on the wall and the same parts annoy me every time I see them lol.

That takes us to my first Paint Pal.
If you don’t know what Paint Pal is, it’s an event where members can sign up to have their name out in a hat by Mr.Micron. Your name gets pulled out and assigned to another member, you get the name of somebody else and paint a picture. It must be 5”x7”, other than that you can do what you want. It’s another challenge that I was reluctant to take, but was so glad I did in the end. It pushed me to try some tougher pieces and I have an incredible collection from friends on the forum who ended up painting for me. It is the definition of a win win.
Never be put off by the voice saying “I’m not good enough”. Everybody started somewhere and receiving anything that somebody else put effort into is genuinely a really cool experience!

Craig Fraser is an artist who’s work really made me want to learn and still inspires me to this day. His automotive techniques are some that I’m working on to this day. So I wanted to try this Biomech piece from his book.
I still kinda like this one even though it ended up too dark for what I wanted. At least you’re able to see what direction I was shooting for. Amount of detail in the reference really intimidated me, so I dumbed it down a little. Now I wish I’d tried harder. But there’s always chance for another go.

I wanted to try another skull on a dark background so that I could add some fire to it. I followed a tutorial from Ryan Townsend (no code PINK)! Lol.
Instead of flooding white in, I actually attempted to build it up in shapes and shade accordingly. I was pretty happy with the skull and nervous about the fire. But aware that I often leave it from fear of screwing it up, I went for it…
And screwed it up lol.
But I learnt that the world did not end, I did not throw all my equipment over the nearest fence. Win.

I think this was my second Paint Pal that went to Twood. I’m not 100% sure, but I do know it was a deliberate attempt to improve on my true fire technique.
Spoiler - I’m still trying to improve my true fire technique.

A quick little Paint Pal practice. This wasn’t an official one, but I painted it for Mr.Micron at 5”x7” for practice. I eventually painted Candy clue over top, but don’t have a photo of that.

I had recently bought the Sixpack “O” Skullz from Artool and Scott MacKay. Quick and dirty piece with Candy2o blood red over top.
