Ok so I grew up painting minis and small scale already 3-D objects so highlights and shadows came natural. My son is a hockey goalie and I am currently working on painting his mask myself using an old catchers mask as the draft mask. I made a logo and had laid the plans out onto the mask. Where I’m struggling is the black on black of the penguin to the background. I outlined the head with Dom short dagger like strokes but don’t like how it turned out. Does anyone have som ideas to pass on to get the Penguin to pop. My thought was a drop shadow but can’t do a drop shadow to my knowledge with black on black. Thanks for the input.

a 'drop' shadow at the top would look odd, shadows are normally below the object.

could you make the other patch a shade lighter ?
