A while back we had a conversation about adapting the Olympos F1 trigger to work on an Eclipse airbrush. I had thought about sweating the cross pin out of the bottom of the f-1 and replacing it with a push pin from an Eclipse trigger. That was the thought anyhow... What it evolved into was my taking a stab at cutting a trigger from scratch, and it has grown since then.

My first attempt was an F1 style trigger for the Eclipse, but I wanted it lower than the factory trigger. So, I cut one from brass that is .100" shorter than factory -

Having done that, and testing with it, I realized I could go shorter yet, and cut another trigger removing another .050" from the overall height - making it .150" shorter than factory.

When I held the brush, I noticed that my finger did not follow the line of the brush, but rather crossed over it from one side to another. I then decided to incorporate this angle into the build of the trigger and cut another with an offset to it.

Once I had done this, I fell in love with the feel, and decided I should cut one for a brush I use more often than my Eclipse; to get a better feel for it, and to test with. So, I cut one for one of my beloved Iwata HP-B's. In addition to angling the trigger pad, I also introduced another angle to the slope as well.

I liked this one so much, I plated it, and it is now in permanent residence on this HP-B.

Needless to say, the experimenting continues -

Awesome work. I like the kick up at the back of your HP-B's one. What is the minimum thickness of the trigger top? If you can make that thinner your finger can drop a bit more.

Damn, that is some impressive work. I take it you like the shorty style. I see Dru is gonna market them now.

Because of the double angles, the left front corner of the trigger pad is where it is the thinnest. Also due to the short distance from the pivot point (as compared to a taller trigger), the finger pad rotates a lot more, making it's front face important for feel and control. I am looking at adding a texture to the front edge in addition to the deep grooves on the top.

Yes, I have always preferred a lower trigger vs. taller. I saw Dru showed some of his pre-production shorties, so I am sure there will be plenty of them around in short order ;).

@DaveG That's fantastic work. You're an awesome machinist. Now there really is a right handed gravity feed HP-B!lol You going to make left handed triggers, too? ;)

hahahaha, would be a bit like watching paint dry, I am afraid ;). I outlined the process on FB (sure you saw it). What I forgot to do was check the time stamp on the photo's first to last - would give a good idea how long it takes to cut a few. It is SLLLLLllllooooow work.

Pulled off my first successful shot at gold plating - This is on one of the Eclipse triggers. The brass part was bright nickle plated, buffed, and then gold plated to finish it off.

wrong handers, you mean? ;) We'll see how things go... I am still trying to figure out if I can get enough of them done in a time frame that makes sense, without a high failure rate in process. In the mean time, if a lefty just HAD to have something like this, they should just message me - I will either do it, or I won't ;). I've already learned my lesson making something because someone "said" they wanted it...

I don't care... I could watch machining work for hours. (I amuse easily lol) I love watching some rusty misshapen lump of metal become a precision ground piece!
