Sign guys learn to paint everything....I highly encourage anyone within reach of one of these classes who wants to do automotive or helmets or sculptures or basically paint anything but paper to go register.
    FREE
The class is phenomenal and taught me a ton when I started out in scenic, though then it was a good bit of money

I cant say for certain if they will accept everyone if you don't have an association with some company that is related to the field but... even then id say its worth a try even if you are just aspiring to paint this type of stuff as a business or side business.
These guys make some of the best paints ive ever used.

Obviously they tell you a lot about their own products, but it all applies

I checked out their website and watched the class video. Seems like a lot of useful info.

I looked into taking a PPG intro class a while back. If I remember it was reasonably priced. I may still check it out.

I'd do this Mathews class again.... If for nothing else maybe some tips about their newer stuff.
Generally now the classes I'd like to do are product line specific and I can't afford them currently. Like I'd like to do ppgs waterborne classes for envirobase and waterborne clear. The waterborne clear is pretty cutting edge, state of the art type stuff

Idk If @Tocean has seen this, I think it was him who mentioned Mathews before. He might have even done the class.

Did PPG buy out Matthews? it's got the PPG logo on the tab. I used Matthews Clear coats(usually matte) in the exterior sign biz, when we switched to PPG I remember the owner wouldn't stop using Matthews clear to cover his 5 year warranty(so I've always held it in high regard), that would of been back in the 90's.

When we switched to PPG we got a color matching machine and new shiny computer to log the colors(usually pantone but I've had to match a brick before) and since I was color matching I got sent to the PPG classroom for a painting and color matching seminar, the machine didn't work worth a damn it just spat out the nearest PPG color. I took Automotive Body Repair in High School so I didn't really need the course at the time, all these years later being out of it I could use a refresher, that or just buy an old car and get sanding:cool:

Idk, as far as I know Mathews has always been manufactured through ppg. Coukd be wrong. I mean , really I think there's only 3-4 actual paint manufacturers.
Its all tangled up. They play supplier to others, but do end product as well.
Mathews I think just specs the ingredients according to their own product research. Maybe they mix it too, idk

IIRC Matthews was a one stage paint, I think the owner still clear coated them as we did I lot of huge signs, like hospitals, it would make sense PPG probably bought them out somewhere in the late 90's once base coat clear coat became the norm, if I ever painted something for outside that needed to last I would definitely still use Matthews, and great thing about matte is it hides all the dust and imperfections, as we had to paint the bigger signs outside of the paint booths.
Speaking of matte I remember what a pain it was to color match with a matte clear, you had to take in account what the matte clear did to the color, almost having to go 3 sheens(or whatever you call it:D) richer.
